As part of the “Alcohol Armageddon” event, the WFA completed it’s forth race of the season Saturday night July 16th at Rocky Mountain Raceway in Salt Lake City, UT.  Eleven teams showed up attempting to knock Dean Oberg from the points lead.  Hot sticky conditions resulted in teams struggling with tune-ups and ultimately a plethora of destruction.  With flying rods, burnt heads and broken transmissions all the teams did a great job of keeping the show rolling, with no down time for track clean up.  Diapers really do work…just ask Ed Middlebrook!

The Ghost Rider altered of Chris Phelps was on a roll, carrying his momentum from Tucson all the way to UT.  Phelps was the man to beat, laying down two nice 6 second passes to be on top of both rounds of qualifying.  First round found Phelps on top with Dean Oberg close on his heels. Eric Gates and Hal Rishton’s “Heaven Bound II” rounded out the top four.  Ed Middlebrook’s 7.31 was good enough to fill his diaper and Jim Carter decided it was time to rebuild a transmission after his 8.21.

Second round, again Phelps was the man to beat.  His wheelstanding, head torching, 6.79 at 211 mph, had the crowd on their feet and the safety crew chasing him down the track. Just what some people will do to take home the RBS supercharges low et award! Not only was Oberg’s 6.85 second quick, but his stellar .025 rt, was good enough to take home the Torco oil quick reaction time award.  Lawton Ferreira rounded out the top 8, but it was Rob Winefsky that took home the FantaZ “who’s got game” award for running the most consistent and showing Team spirit.

The Final round was set up to be Chris Phelps and Dean Oberg but after Phelp’s circus act, he was unable to return.  So the Barona Dragway Special of Eric Gates took on the Freightliner Simple Pleasure Fiat of Oberg.  At the hit it was Oberg all the way.  A .030 rt put him out front early. Oberg added insult to injury by firing the “shot heard around the world” as he blew the burst panel in the lights and coasted through for the win. Congrats to the Simple Pleasure team for taking another win and continuing to extend their points lead.  Is it time for bounty?

Thanks to Rocky Mountain Raceways for their hospitality and great track prep. Pictures from the event can be found here:

The actual track elevation is 4252, which means that the hi-helix blowers are limited to 43% overdrive at this event.

Paid member entry is:  Free car/driver, 4 crew and 2 vehicle passes. You must be pre-entered with WFA, one week in advance, to get in free.  Pre-entry deadline is July 10th. Teams failing to pre-enter will pay event gate fees.

Friday – Parking anytime after 1pm. We will have reserved spaces.  Friday night they have a Summit Super Series race going on. NO AVAILABILITY OF TEST PASSES.

Saturday - Parking all morning. Gates open at 9 am, however please be parked prior to noon, to help avoid the rush when spectator gates open. This event will be our standard format.
